Adequate infrastructure important for tourism expansion, says Prez Patil

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has stressed the need for multi pronged strategy to ensure hassle free and comfortable stay of tourists in the country. She said that adequate infrastructure, proper rail, road and air connectivity and accommodation facilities, which cater to various budgets are some of the important factors in expanding the tourism sector.

Addressing the National tourism awards function in New Delhi today, the President said tourism generates more jobs for relatively less investment. She said that tourism can be the driver of economic growth and development of a country.

Mrs. Patil said, people are getting more conscious about their health and there is growing interest in the Indian system of Ayurveda treatment and yoga. Spiritual sites such as Buddhist Circuit and rural traditions handicrafts and food are also popular among the tourist.

The President said that new technology like e-ticket and e- booking can be used to promote the tourism.

Speaking on the occasion Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay said, his ministry has introduced three new category of awards from this year. These include The Best State Campaign Clean India and Best Heritage walk.

Mrs. Patil gave away the awards in various areas of tourism and categories. Sikkim bagged best tourism promoter award among the northeastern states, while Madhya Pradesh received this award in rest of India category.
