UPA chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi today called for using minimum fertile land for acquisition in big projects. Mrs Sonia Gandhi advocated for adequate compensation to farmers for their land and alternatives for their livelihood. Speaking at a function in New Delhi after dedicating NTPC's National Capital Thermal Power project stage two at Dadri, Mrs Gandhi also called for protecting environment for sustainable development. Ms Gandhi said UPA government is committed to provide affordable electricity to all. Speaking on the occasion, Power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said 84,000 villages of the country have been electrified so far. Mr Shinde said Delhi will get over 1,200 Mega watt power surplus in the days to come. AIR correspondent Souvagya Kar reports the Dadri thermal power project of NTPC of 980 mega watt capacity addition has been earmarked to supply power to the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.The launch of the stage two of national capital thermal power project at Dadri is yet another important step for the successful hosting of the first ever Commonwealth Games being organised in India. The Delhi Metro has already launched its Delhi-Gurgaon service and some other services are on the anvil. Besides this, several infrastructure projects have come up. The Dadri thermal power project is one of the three power generating plants which has used gas based modules, considered essential for maintaining the ecology and environment. The striking feature of this project is the largest switchyard in the country with a power handling capacity of 4,500 mega watt.
