Additional 300 crores for NH repair and maintenance

The Finance Ministry has agreed to provide additional allocation of 300 crore rupees to the Road Transport Ministry for maintenance and repair of National Highways, NHs. The estimated requirement of funds during 2011-12 were stood at 2,800 crore rupees.

According to an official release, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also taken a policy initiative to take up operation and maintenance of the developed stretches of National Highways on Operate, Maintain Transfer basis through private sector participation.

The aim is to keep the highways in traffic worthy conditions. It has also taken up the issue of enhancing the allocations of funds for maintenance and repair of National Highways with the Finance Ministry.

The maintenance and repair of National Highways NHs are carried out annually as per availability of funds, extent of damages and inter-se priority.
