Mumbai’s controversial Adarsh Society on Thursday challenged the union government’s demolition order saying that the Society had taken all necessary permissions from Maharashtra government prior to construction. Senior Counsel Mr Mukul Rohatgi, appearing from the Adarsh side told the division bench of Justices Ranjana Desai and R G Ketkar of the Bombay High Court that the society should not be blamed for miscommunication between the state and the Centre. Mr. Rohatgi also argued that in 2003, the Union government had sent a letter to the Maharashtra government saying that state had the power to decide on the construction of Adarsh. The division bench would hear the Union government's arguments on 2nd of May. Meanwhile, earlier today, the two-member judicial panel set up to probe the Adarsh Housing Society scam questioned the Maharashtra government's silence on the ownership of the disputed land on which Adarsh stands. Retired High Court Justice J A Patil, who is heading the commission, said that the Army has submitted documents claiming the land belongs to them but the state government is keeping silent.
