Adarsh scam: CBI carries out raids in Mumbai, other cities

A day after registering an FIR in the Adarsh Housing Society scam, the CBI is carrying out raids in Mumbai and other cities today at the homes of some of the people named in the FIR.The raids are being conducted across Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nagpur, and Patna, at the premises of retired Major General MM Wanchoo, promoter of the society RC Thakur and former Congress MLC Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, according to CBI sources. The searches were also conducted at the Adarsh Housing Society building and office in Mumbai. The CBI yesterday filed an FIR in the case. The developments came after the Bombay High Court last week asked the CBI to complete its probe into the Adarsh housing society scam in two weeks. The 31-storey Adarsh Housing Society, originally meant for Kargil war heroes, landed in controversy after media reports said that several politicians, bureaucrats and defence personnel owned flats there. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Environment and Forests ordered the demolition of the Adarsh building within three months, saying that the scandal-hit project in Colaba was unauthorised and violated the rules relating of the Coastal Regulations Zone (CRZ) Notification, 1991.
