The CBI today made its first arrests in the multi crore Adarsh Society scam. Four people, the chief promoter of Adarsh Society, R C Thakur, retired Brigadier and defence estates officer, M M Wanchoo, former deputy secretary of Maharashtra’s Urban Development department, P V Deshmukh and former Congress MLC, Kanhaiyalal Gidwani were arrested today morning. All the four accused would be produced before a special CBI court on Wednesday. These arrests have been made almost a year after the scam broke out and after the Bombay High Court rapped the CBI for not arresting any of accused in the case.
According to CBI, P V Deshmukh , R C Thakur and M M Wanchoo conspired with other state government and defence officials to illegally get the land allotted in favour of Adarsh society, while Gidwani is alleged to have used his political influence to get the files passed quickly.
Meanwhile, earlier today, a special CBI court today granted bail to Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, his son and two others, arrested in a bribery case. CBI had arrested them on 5th March alleging that all of them had tried to influence CBI officials to dilute the case in their favour.
