The Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has offered to resign in connection with Adarsh Housing Colony Controversy in Mumbai. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, after his hour long meeting with the Congress President Sonia Gandhi, he said that he has left to the party chief to decide on his successor. Chavan said he has placed before Sonia Gandhi all the facts relating to the housing society and welcomed the CBI inquiry into it. He maintained that the land on which the housing society had come up belonged to the state government and suggested that there were other chief ministers who were involved in decisions taken on the project.AICC General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi told reporters after the meeting that the party President has asked senior leaders Pranab Mukherjee and A K Antony to give a report on the whole matter. He added that any further development on the issue would take place only after their report.Chavan was summoned New Delhi last night after reports emerged that three of his relatives were allotted flats in Adarsh Group Housing Society in Colaba Mumbai. Ahead of the crucial meeting with the Maharashtra Chief Minister Mrs. Sonia Gandhi held consultations with the senior party leaders on the issue. Union Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Jairam Ramesh besides party leaders Janardan Dwivedi and Ahmed Patel are among those who met the Congress Chief. The Defence Minister A.K. Antony held the consultations with the Congress Chief last evening. Our Correspondent reports that the Congress High Command appears to be upset with Chavan whose relatives have reportedly been allotted flats in the Housing Colony Project. Several politicians, former defence services chiefs and other influential people have reportedly been allotted flats in the society. The land on which the 31 storey building has been constructed in Colaba, Mumbai was reportedly allotted for Kargil war heroes and widows. The Maharashtra Chief Minister yesterday announced surrender of flats allotted to his relatives. The Defence Minister A.K. Antony has directed the army and navy to ascertain the facts about the ownership rights of the land used by the society.
