Noted jurists, intellectuals and activist from all around the country gathered on Thursday in Shillong for, a three-day, third National Right to Information Convention. The inauguration took place at Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong with traditional drum beats and songs. Speaking on the occasion, RTI activist Sushila shared her experience when she and her fellow women of Rajasthan had started the movement in 1996. Two women activists from Jongsha village of East Khasi Hills district shared their agony after three of them dared to filed an RTI application against the wrong-doings of local village council leaders. They had been excommunicated from all social contacts since then and deprived of their daily rations, however, their fight is still on. RTI activist Vinay Mahajan sang a song titled, ‘Mere sapno ko janne ka haq re…’ (My dreams have the right to know…), which has become the song of the RTI movement. The Plenary session of the convention would be addressed by Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mushahary later on Thursday. It would be addressed by former Chief Justice of India Justice J S Verma also. A souvenir will be jointly released by, among others, former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh and noted social activist Aruna Roy.
