Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal creates history by becoming first Indian woman to achieve top world ranking

Star shuttler Saina Nehwal today scripted history after becoming the first Indian woman to reach World number one spot in Badminton World Federation Rankings. Saina reached the No 1 spot after All England Badminton champion Carolina Marin of Spain lost to Ratchanok Intanon of Thialand in semi-final encounter in the Indian Open Super Series in Delhi today. Saina Nehwal stormed into the women singles final by hammering Japan's Yuo Hashimoto 21-15, 21-11. AIR correspondent reports that Saina who will take on Ratchanok Intanon in the Indian Open final has already dethroned injured Chinese LI Xuerui from the top spot, which she occupied for a record 119 weeks. At the start of the year, Saina was ranked number four behind the Chinese trio of Li Xuerui, Wang Shixian and Wang Yihan. Saina becomes only second Indian overall to be world number one after Prakash Padukone had the distinction of being the Numero Uno men's badminton. London Olympics bronze medalist Saina has won a staggering 14 international titles in her glorious career. She became first Indian woman to enter the final of All England Championship. Though the official rankings will be out only on Thursday next week, the 25-year old Saina has been assured of her ascent to the top. President Pranab Mukherjee congratulated the Saina Nehwal for achieving the feat. In a tweet, Mukherjee said, Congrats Saina Nehwal on becoming World no 1 in Badminton well deserved honor; best wishes for Indian Open Semi Final. It is the first time that any Indian badminton player in the history has been ranked Number one.Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Saina Nehwal for becoming World Number 1 in badminton ranking. In a tweet message, Modi congratulated her on being the World Number 1," and making India proud.
