<span style="color: #222222;">The National Commission of Women (NCW) has said that accountability of police and state authorities need to be fixed in connection with the violence in West Bengal. The NCW Chairperson  Rekha Sharma was on a two-day visit to West Bengal from 5th of this month to inquire into the incidents of violence including heinous crimes such as rape and murder against women in West Bengal post elections.</span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> The Commission had taken suo motu cognizance of the incidents and constituted a three member Fact-Finding Committee to look into the matter.The Commission in a statement said, there is also a need for sensitization and training of police officials for better handling of cases related to women and the number of women police officers in the force must be increased.The team upon talking to several victims has observed that the Police officials of West Bengal were not taking effective steps to provide security to women in the state. The team received information about many stranded victims who left their homes because of violence and are currently forced to stay in a shelter home. The team was informed by the victims that they were physically assaulted and their homes were vandalised and set ablaze by TMC goons.The Commission said, there is no effective rehabilitation schemes for women in distress and women are unaware about the welfare schemes launched for them by the Central Government. It said, there is a need for conducting awareness programmes on schemes of Central government at district levels.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">  </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The NCW Chairperson and the team also met West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar, and discussed the rising cases of atrocities against women and it was decided that a district-wise compilation of all the complaints should be made. Mr Dhankar also suggested that detailed information should be sought from District Magistrates and Police officials regarding number of FIRs and their status there of and police officials should be directed to appear before the Commission with reports.</span><br />''  <br />
