Gangster Abu Salem today filed a petition in Mumbai’s designated TADA court, seeking immediate closure of the trial against him in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts’ case. Salem's Counsel moved an application before special TADA Judge G A Sanap after the Portuguese Supreme Court decided that India has violated the extradition treaty in Salem’s case.
Meanwhile, CBI has said that there should be no repercussion on Abu Salem’s status and on the trial against him. The petition will come up for hearing tomorrow when CBI is likely to file its reply. Abu Salem is facing as many as eight cases, including the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast case, builder Pradeep Jain’s murder case, two cases of forgery in Lucknow and three cases of extortion in Delhi. He was extradited to India in 2005, after a marathon legal process in Portugal lasting three years.
