The government today admitted that about 3.57 lakh infants die on the first day of their birth. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Mr. Dinesh Trivedi said that studies conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research shows that 39 per cent of neonatal deaths take place on the first day of life. He said that 71 per cent of them die because of pre-natal conditions and 15 per cent from respiratory infections and the rest for other health related reasons.<br/>
