A group of terrorists stormed a Pakistan Air Force, PAF base at Kamra in Punjab province believed to house nuclear weapons. The attack by about 10 militants early this morning triggered an intense gun battle with security forces that lasted over three hours. The terrorists, some of whom were reportedly wearing military uniforms, sneaked into Kamra airbase about 2 AM despite a state of high alert at the facility. The attackers breached at least three barriers and tried to target Saab-2000 surveillance aircraft. TV news channels report that at least five to six attackers have been gunned down by commandoes. The terrorists reportedly entered the airbase from Pind Suleman Makhan, a village adjoining the PAF facility. An elite anti-terrorism commando unit has been dispatched to Kamra from Rawalpindi after the PAF sought help from the army. Statements issued by the PAF confirmed the attack.
Meanwhile, agency reports say that two Pakistani security personnel have been killed in the gun battle.
Speaking to Prasar Bharati, the PTI Correspondent in Islamabad Reza-ul Hasan Lashkar said that the attackers could have had help from elements within the airbase.
