Abdulla Yameen of Progressive Party of Maldives was sworn in as the 6th President of the country by the Majlis in a special ceremony today. Yameen, half brother of former President Abdul Gayoom, defeated Nasheed in a straight fight yesterday.

Vice President-elect Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed will also be sworn in at the ceremony, to be held in State convention centre Dharubaaruge. Speaking to the press, Yameen said that the country now needs stability and hoped that he would get cooperation from former President Nasheed.

Nasheed conceded defeat this morning on a conciliatory note. Addressing the press Nasheed said he was pleased that the country finally had a democratically elected leader. He said it was a happy day for the country as it now had an elected government. In reply to a question on his political future, Nasheed said that he will continue to work for the people and the country.
