Abbas to ask UN for recognition of Palestinian state

President Mahmoud Abbas has said that if negotiations with Israel do not go anywhere by September he will go to the United Nations to ask for recognition of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.According to Palestinian news agency Wafa, President Abbas said this during a speech at the opening of a meeting of the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah today. He said, that the Palestinian reconciliation, which Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and US President Obama have asked Abbas to negate, is a major Palestinian interest that should be completed and implemented. He termed the speech of President Obama regarding the borders of the Palestinian state on the 1967 lines as a positive development while accusing Israeli Prime Minister of moving very far from the peace process.
