The Airports Authority of India, AAI, has initiated steps for a major facelift of several important airports in Assam to increase the tourist flow and smooth supply of essential items in the North-East.According to an official press release at Guwahati, the Airport Authority has planned to invest 750 crore rupees for expansion of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport at Borjhar. The State Government has assured the Airports Authority to hand over required land for expansion of the LGBI airport within seven days.Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who had a detailed discussion with the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India also suggested introduction of night-landing facilities in the LGBI airport.Similarly, major expansion, infrastructure development and revival plans are being finalized for Rupsi Airport at Dhubri, bordering Bangladesh, during the 12th Plan period besides other vital airports at Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Dibrugarh.AIR correspondent reports that the revival package of the Airport Authority will fulfill the commitment of the UPA Government for providing better air-connectivity to the remote and border areas of the North-East, which is much-needed for supply of essential commodities and security point of view in the land-locked region.
