AADHAAR to be used to plug leakages in PDS

The government is working with the Unique Identification Authority to make use of Identification Numbers known as AADHAAR to plug the leakages in the Public Distribution System (PDS).Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, consumer affairs and public distribution minister K V Thomas said that a vibrant PDS is essential for ensuring food security for the needy and deserving sections of our society . He, however, admitted that there are leakages in the system.Referring to the challenge of creating additional storage capacity of 17 million tonnes of foodgrains, Mr Thomas said after the Food Security Bill is passed, the country will be in need of 60 million tonnes of storage capacity. He added at present there is a total capacity of 43 million tonnes of foodgrains.Earlier, Mr. Thomas chaired a meeting of food ministers from northern states.
