A.R. Rahman gets two Grammy Awards

Indian music maestro A R Rahman has won two Grammy Awards for his music from Oscar-winning film 'Slumdog Millionaire'. <br/><br/>In the star studded awards function at the Staples Center in Los Angesles last night, Rahman registered an early win in both the categories he was nominated for, the 'Best Compilation Soundtrack for a Motion Picture' category and in the 'Best Motion Picture Song' for 'Jai Ho'.<br/><br/>He shares the award with lyricist Gulzar and Tanvi Shah, who penned the Spanish lyrics of the international hit. The Grammy success comes after Rahman earned two Oscars for his music in 'Slumdog Millionaire' at last year's Academy Awards, where he picked up the Oscar for the best original score and the best song.<br/><br/>Meanwhile Sarod maestro Amjad Ali, who was nominated in the Best Traditional World Music Album category for his album 'Ancient Sounds', lost out to Douga Mansa by Mamadou Diabate.<br/><br/>Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, who had won a Grammy last year, and nominated in the Best Classical Crossover Album category for his album 'The Melody of Rhythm' this lost out to Yo-Yo Ma's 'Songs Of Joy And Peace'.<br/><br/>Pop star Beyonce was the big winner at the Grammy ceremony in Los Angeles, winning six prizes. Starting the night with 10 nominations, her awards included song of the year and best R&B song, both for 'Single Ladies'.<br/><br/>Beyonce has set a new record for the most awards won in a single year by a solo female, and takes her career tally to 16.<br/><br/>Her other awards this year included best contemporary R&B album, best R&B female vocal for Single Ladies and best traditional R&B performance for 'At Last', which she performed at President Obama's inauguration.<br/><br/>She also won best pop vocal performance for 'Halo'.Twenty-year-old country star Taylor Swift picked up four prizes, including the coveted album of the year title.<br/><br/>The Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z and Kings of Leon all picked up three trophies each, while Lady GaGa and Eminem won two. <br/><br/>Michael Jackson's children Paris and Prince accepted a lifetime achievement award on behalf of the King of Pop, who died last June.
