A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale rattled New Zealand's Kermadec Islands in the Pacific Ocean this morning. The Kermadec Islands are a remote outpost that is generally uninhabited aside from a weather station and a hostel for visiting New Zealand scientists. The Kermadecs are about 570 miles south of Tonga, the nearest major island. No tsunami alert was issued.
