A powerful cyclone kills 27 people in Myanmar

In Myanmar, at least 27 people have been killed and 15 are missing after a powerful cyclone struck western part of the country. According to state media report; cyclone Giri destroyed 2,800 homes, dozens of government buildings and two bridges. The state radio said that the storm with a speed up to 193 kilometres per hour slammed into the coast of Rakhine state on Friday.The town of Kyaukphyu is reported to be the worst hit with several houses in the town being severely damaged. According to reports by the state media, the government has taken steps to provide relief to the affected people in the form of clothes, foodstuff, and bottles of water. In addition to this corrugated iron sheets, construction materials and cash assistance is also being provided to help the affected people build temporary shelters. Earlier in 2008, more than 100,000 people were killed in Myanmar by Cyclone Nargis.
