A K Antony: Talks with Pak on Siachen issue in June

Defence Minister A K Antony today said, there will be talks with Pakistan on Siachen issue in the second week of June. He however said that dramatic results should not be expected. Replying to a discussion on the working of the Defence Ministry, Mr Antony said, there is no change in the position on Siachen and India wants authentication of troop positions. He said, the Opposition should give healthy suggestions to improve the country's defence preparedness.

The Defence Minister assured the House that the suggestions of the members will be taken with serious note and appropriate corrections will be made. Mr Antony said, the government is committed to give state of the art arms and ammunition to the armed forces. Admitting that the country has volatile and dangerous neighbourhood, Mr Antony expressed worry about the growing proximity between China and Pakistan. He asserted that the defence forces have been directed to be fully prepared to meet the challenges of new emerging threats.

Earlier, leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley said that defence preparedness has to be matched with the changing realities.
