Defence Minister A K Antony today paid homage to martyrs of Kargil war at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate in the national capital . The three services cheifs , Chief of the Army Staff General Bikram Singh, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal N A K Browne also paid homage to Kargil martyrs.
Hailing the sacrifice made by jawans and officers of the armed forces, the Defence Minister called it a historic day for the country. He said , the nation is paying homage to the sacrifice made by jawans and officers to protect the honour of the country.
The Defence Minister will be visiting Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow to review the security situation in the forward areas. He will also chair a meeting of Unified Headquarters in Srinagar and meet Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Interacting with reporters after the function to pay homage to the martyrs of defence forces on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas in New Delhi this morning, Mr.A.K.Antony said that during his two day visit beginning tomorrow, he will meet jawans and officers and see the situation in the forward areas. He will be accompanied by the Army Chief and Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma.
In reply to a query on demands by the armed forces for a War Memorial in the national capital, Defence Minister said, things are progressing in a comfortable manner on the issue.
India today asserted that there will be never another Kargil type situation will occur on the soil. Speaking to media in Drass, Lt General K T Parnaik, GoC Northern Command said the Army is fully prepared to tackle any kind of situation in the LoC. Gen Parnaik said peace is prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir and Army will prevent any attempts by the terrorists to resurface.
