About 981 hectares of land belonging to Indian Railways is under encroachment. This constitutes 0.23 per cent of the total land holding of 4.31 lakh hectares of the Railways. Official sources said there has been no increase in encroachments during the last three years ending 31st of March 2011. The encroached land includes 220 hectares falling under the Northern Railway Zone.
