The Government says, 95 million people will be living in urban slums in the country by 2012. This has been brought out in a report prepared by a committee set up for the purpose. This was revealed by the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Ms. Selja while inaugurating an international conference on Innovative Building Technologies for Affordable Mass Housing in New Delhi this morning. She said presently, there is a shortage of over 25 million houses in economically weaker sections and low income groups. The Minister said that government has taken major initiatives to address the housing problem of weaker sections. She asserted to empower the urban poor a model legal framework for the consideration of the States and Union Territories. She said this legal framework can give property rights to slum dwellers. AIR correspondent reports that Ms. Selja spoke at length about various schemes and programmes launched by the UPA government for weaker sections of society. She added that the inclusive growth and the concerns of the common man continue to be the focus of the government.
