92 fall ill due to Mumbai gas leak; cleaning operation still on

Cleaning operation is still on at the Mumbai Port Trust from where chlorine gas leaked out in the wee hours of Wednesday morning affecting 92 people. <br/><br/>From Mumbai’s J J Hospital, 14 people have been discharged after initial treatment. 78 people are still recuperating; out of them 18 remain critical.<br/><br/>According to the Dean of JJ hospital T P Lahane, all people had been suffering from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome characterized by breathlessness and irritation in the eyes.<br/><br/>According to initial reports, chlorine gas leaked form one of the 136 cylinders stored at MPT’s warehouse for hazardous cargo. Speaking to AIR, spokesperson of Mumbai Port Trust Mr. Mohan Chandran informed that the situation was now under control.<br/><br/>He said that the relief and rescue operation was on in full swing. He added that the MPT officials along with experts from Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers and Century Rayon were working on cleaning and neutralising the entire site and added that the work would get over by tonight. <br/><br/>He informed that that the Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Traffic Manager and other senior officials of Mumbai Port Trust were present at the site and supervising the entire operation.<br/><br/>Maharashtra’s Health Minister Vijay Kumar Gavit and Mayor Shraddha Jadhav also visited the affected area today. <br/><br/>Mrs. Jadhav told reporters that the Mumbai Police, BMC and MPT were jointly conducting a probe into the gas leak. The Ministry of Shipping has sought a detailed report from the Mumbai Port Trust regarding this incident.
