90 killed, 22 missing in Typhoon Mirinae in Central Vietnam

At least 90 people have been killed in flooding in central Vietnam sparked by Tropical Storm Mirinae, which slammed into the country this week. Officials today said another 22 people were reported missing after the storm struck on Monday, destroying hundreds of homes. Water in places reached up to the rooftops of buildings, where some residents had sought refuge. <br/>TV channel reported that 200,000 people were stranded in Binh Dinh province alone. Two thousand soldiers had been deployed to help with the rescue effort. The national disaster committee said Typhoon Mirinae had destroyed 700 homes and damaged more than 13,000 others in the central coastal areas. The committee said some 5,000 hectares of farmland had been ruined or were covered in floodwater. Weathermen said Typhoon Mirinae has downgraded into a tropical low pressure, but more rain is still forecast for central provinces in the next few days.<br/>
