In West Bengal, 83 per cent voting has been recorded in the sixth and final phase of assembly elections for 14 assembly seats covering parts of West Midnapur, Bankura and Purulia districts. Several voters were still in que to cast their votes when polling came to a close at 3 pm. State Chief Electoral Officer Mr. Sunil Gupta told AIR that polling passed of peacefully and no major untoward incident has so far been reported from any part of Maoist infested areas. 24 electronic voting machines have been replaced from various polling booths due to technical snag. Unprecedented security arrangements are in place in three Maoists infested districts to ensure free and fair polling. Besides state police, 650 company para military forces are on duty in these areas. Over 26 lakh 55 thousand electorate will decide the fortune of 97 candidates. Prominent candidates in the fray include Minister Sushanta Ghosh, Rabilal Moitra and leader of moist backed Peoples Committee Mr. Chatradhar Mahato who is contesting from jail as an independent.
