80 injured as garment workers clash with B'desh police over minimum wage demand

In Bangladesh, at least 80 people were injured as readymade garment workers clashed with the police yesterday in the industrial belt of Gazipur, Savar and Ashulia, demanding a minimum wage of 8100 takas. About 50 garment factories have been closed because of the agitation and clashes. The workers agitation going on for last few days, had turned violent on Monday, resulting in the death of two garment workers. The government appointed Wage Board has fixed 5300 takas as minimum monthly wage, representing around 76 per cent rise over earlier monthly wage of 3000 takas. After initial refusal, the two major factory owners associations, Bangladesh Readymade Garments Manufacturers Exporters' Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters' Association (BKMEA) have agreed to pay the wage board recommended minimum wage. However, Workers' Unions are demanding a minimum monthly wage of 8100 takas. Last night leaders of BGMEA and BKMEA met government authorities and urged them to take action against political elements instigating violence in the garment sector.
