8 women dead after sterilization surgery in Chhattisgarh; CM orders inquiry

In Chhattisgarh, eight women died and more than 50 others fell ill after sterlisation surgeries in government health camp in Bilaspur district. The condition of 12 women was reported to be critical.

Our Correspondent reports that this camp was organized in Pendari village of Takhatpur block in Bilaspur district last Saturday. The camp was organised as a part of family planning programme. Total 83 women of 40 nearby villages were operated in the period of six hours in this camp. After few hours of surgery most of them reportedly started complaining of pain and fever.

At present more than 50 women are undergoing treatment in four different hospitals of Bilaspur. Condition of 12 women is critical. Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh has ordered an inquiry into the incident and a three member committee has been constituted in this regard.

The government has announced Rs. 2 lakh each to the next of kin those who died in this incident. Chief Minister today went to Bilaspur and met the victims of the incident. He instructed health authorities to give best possible treatment to the victims.
