8 dead in West Bengal political clash

In West Bengal, the death toll following a clash between ruling CPI (M) supporters and opposition Trinamool Congress activists has risen to eight. The incident occured at Netai Village in Lalgarh at West Midnapore district on Friday .State Home Secretary G D Gautam said 18 people were injured during the clash. He said there were no involvement of the Maoists in the incident and it was a purely political violence. Gautam said that the administration had no information that the victims were Trinamool Congress supporters. The Trinamool Congress Chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticised the incident. She alleged in Kolkata that CPI (M) supporters fired bullets from their camp to her party supporters. Meanwhile, Home Minister P Chidambaram has urged West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to reschedule all his appointments and visit Delhi immediately for discussions. Chidambaram has written a letter to the Chief Minister. Describing violence in Lalgarh as a grave incident, the Home Minister said that he has received information that eight people were killed and eighteen others injured in it.
