7th regional meet on electoral reforms in NE states at Guwahati

In Assam, the seventh regional consultation meeting on electoral reforms comprising the eight North Eastern states is being held at Guwahati today. The meet has been organized by the Union Law Ministry in collaboration with the Election Commission. Union Law Minister Virappa Moilly besides the Chief Ministers of all the North-Eastern states, including Sikkim, Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi and the other two Election Commissioners are attending the meeting. Citizens groups, individuals, representatives of political parties, jurists, academics, journalists and civil liberty activists will also attend the meeting. AIR Guwahati Correspondent reports that the meet is to discuss several important issues relating to the poll panel's initiatives to check criminalisation of politics, funding and better management of polls and regulation of political parties, among others, during the day-long deliberations. After completion of the regional meets, the penultimate round of National Consultation on electoral reforms is scheduled to be held at Guwahati on 2nd and 3rd of the next month. The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is likely the address the national consultation meet.
