The 7th Cauvery River Authority Meeting will be held tomorrow at New Delhi under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Cauvery river is the life-line of thousands of farmers in the delta districts of Tamil Nadu including Thanjai, Nagai and Tiruvarur. The Cauvery river water is stored in Mettur Dam and released every year on June 12 for Kuruvai cultivation and this year the dam was opened only yesterday in time for Samba cultivation.
The Central government formed the Cauvery River Authority in 1997 to find a solution to the issue mainly between the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The last meeting was held in February 2003 under the chairmanship of the then Prime Minister A B Vajpayee. Tamil Nadu had filed a petition in Supreme Court urging the Centre to convene this meeting. Cauvery delta farmers are eagerly waiting for a decision that will give more water for their samba cultivation.
