Seventy-seven fresh dengue cases were reported in the national capital today taking the total number of such cases to 5,140. According to statistics provided by MCD, out of them, 74 cases were reported from MCD areas, while 3 from NDMC areas. So far, eight persons have lost their lives due to dengue this season.B’desh to impose ban on production of drug Diclofenac sodium ‘The Bangladesh Cabinet today decided to impose a ban on the production of the drug Diclofenac sodium which has been found to be harmful for the endangered Vulture population in the country. The proposal to stop the of production of the drug which is widely used for its anti inflammatory properties was given approval by the Cabinet which was chaired by the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka today.’Briefing reporters on the cabinet decisions, the Media adviser to the Bangladesh Prime Minister, Mr. Abul Kalam Azad said that while the production of the drug will be stopped, the companies will however be allowed to market the already produced medicine for another six months.Studies have shown that vultures suffer from renal failure after eating carcasses tainted with diclofenac, and die within a few days. The Bangladesh government’s move is seen as an attempt to save the dwindling number of vultures in the country which have reportedly fallen down to a mere 2000.
