In Tamilnadu, 75 per cent polling was recorded in the first phase of the civic body polls which covered 10 municipal corporations, 60 municipalities, 259 town panchayats and 191 panchayat unions.Salem and Tiruppur recorded the highest with 68 per cent each while the lowest was in Chennai with 48 per cent. Seventy-eight per cent polling was reported in rural areas and 72 per cent votes were recorded in Town Panchayats and Municipalities.Talking to newspersons at Chennai, the State Election Comissioner Mr. S. Ayyar said that polling was by and large peaceful barring a few incidents. He said that the comission would review the complaint petitions along with the observors. The second phase will be conducted tomorrow and results announced on the 21st of this month.
