The government has launched Rajiv Awas Yojana for the slum dwellers and the urban poor recently. The scheme aims at providing support to States that are willing to provide property right to slum dwellers.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja said that her Ministry is also implementing Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission aimed at providing basic amenities and affordable housing to the urban poor especially slum dwellers since December, 2005.
She said as per the Census 2001, the number of children in the age group 0-6 living in slum areas of the country was 75.77 lakh.
