74 per cent polling has been reported in Monday's first phase of elections that took place in 54 Assembly Constituencies in West Bengal. Briefing reporters in New Delhi, the Deputy Election Commissioner, Mr. Vinod Zutshi said that polling exercise was totally peaceful and incident free. He said that 6 cases of poll boycott have also been reported by the people as they registered their protest against negligence in development works in the areas.State Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta said in Kolkata on Sunday evening that 92 electronic voting machines were replaced in various polling stations due to technical snag. Boycotting of votes were also reported from polling booths in Malda and South Dinajpur districts. The Police arrested ten persons as preventive measures from different parts of North Bengal on Monday. Polling took place today in six North Bengal districts. Altogether 364 candidates were in the fray. 28 General Observers, nine expenditure and two police observers were engaged to monitor the poll process.
