7 Research Projects awarded to evaluate consequences of climate change on river flows: Govt

The government has awarded seven Research Projects to evaluate the consequences of climate change on river flows and groundwater characteristics as well as to identify adaptation strategies.<br/><br/> In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Uma Bharti said, these projects are related to Mahanadi, Mahi, Luni, Tapi, Subarnarekha and Sabarmati river basins and western basins from Tadri to Kanyakumari.<br/><br/> She said, the Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment of India shows over one thousand ground water units in 18 States as over exploited out of nearly 6600 assessed units in these States. She also informed that the Ministry has taken up the National Groundwater Improvement Programme as Central Sector Scheme with a total outlay of six thousand crore rupees out of which half of the amount will be available as World Bank loan. <br/><br/>Ms Bharti also informed that the government has established National Water Mission under National Action Plan on Climate Change for conservation of water, minimising wastage and ensuring more equitable distribution of water both across and within the States.
