A strong earthquake has hit northeastern Japan. The U.S. Geological Survey says the preliminary magnitude of the quake was 7.2. The temblor was center about 10 kilometers below the earth's surface and about 200 kilometers off the coast of Japan's northern Honshu Island. Buildings shook in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, about 430 kilometers away, but no damage was reported. Officials issued a tsunami warning of up to a half-meter for the northeastern coast. Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. About 20 percent of the world's major earthquakes strike Japan.
