68 candidates withdrew nominations for K’taka Legislative Council election

In Karnataka 68 candidates on Friday withdrew their nominations for the election to the Karnataka Legislative Council. Remaining 93 candidates will compete for 23 seats in the upper house. The ruling BJP and Opposition Congress won a seat each in the elections being held to 25 seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council from local bodies.<br/>Pratapchandra Shetty of Congress and Srinivas Poojary of BJP were elected unopposed in Dakshina Kannada district on Friday. <br/><br/>The Joint Chief Electoral Officer B V Kulkarni informed that this heppened when the four nominees out of the six who had filed papers withdrew from the contest. <br/>Friday was the last day for withdrwal of nominations. Congress and JDS have forged an electoral tie-up to fight BJP in the elections. <br/><br/>In the seat sharing formula, Congress has conceeded eight seats to JDS out of 25. There are 21 BJP nominees, 16 from Congress, eight JDS, 46 indepenents and one each from Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha and Bharatiya Rastreeya Sahayoga Party.<br/><br/>Out of 75 seats in the Council, both Congress and BJP held 28 seats and JD(S) had 12. <br/><br/>In the election being held for 25 seats, Congress held 19 seats,BJP four and JD(S) one. December 18 is the election and the counting of votes will take place on December 21.<br/>
