66 Tamil fishermen released by Sri Lanka return home

Sixty six Tamil fishermen released from Sri Lankan jail returned to Karaikal port in Tamil Nadu last night. Our correspondent reports that the fishermen were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard by Sri Lankan Navy at the International Maritime Boundary line. The fishermen families of Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai are rejoicing the return of fellow fishermen before Christmas. Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister Jayapal and fisheries officials received them at the port. They were given new clothes, food and water. Then they were sent to their respective fisheries hamlets after routine procedures. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Sri Lankan fishermen in Tamil Nadu jails will be released as a good will gesture before Christmas in reciprocation of release of Tamil fishermen languishing in Lankan jail. Tamil fishermen are worried that more than 81 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka will get damaged due to lack of maintenance and this will affect their livelihood badly.
