In West Bengal, 65 per cent voting was recorded in the by-election in Bhawanipur and Basirhat North Assembly Constituencies on Sunday. The State Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Sunil Gupta told newsmen this evening that voting was ended peacefully without any major untoward incident. In Bhawanipur 50 per cent polling and in Basirhat North over 80 per cent polling was recorded till 5 p.m. Polling percentage is likely to go up as many people are waiting inside the polling station till evening to exercise their franchise. Mr. Gupta informed that the polling was hampered in the day due to rain but progressed well following improvement of weather in the afternoon. AIR Kolkata Correspondent reports that the Chief Minister, Ms. Mamta Banerjee is contesting from Bhawanipur seat as Trinamool Congress nominee against her main rival Prof. Nandini Mukherjee of the CPIM. Besides four other candidates are in the fray in this seat. In Basirhat North Constituency the Trinamool Congress candidate, Mr. A.T.M. Abdullah is fighting against Mr. Subid Ali Gazi of CPIM. Two candidates including BJP are also contesting from this seat. The seats were fallen vacant following resignation of Trinamool Congress MLA and PWD Minister, Mr.Subroto Bakshi from Bhawanipur seat and death of CPIM Legislator, Mustafa Bin Kasem in Basirhat North Constituency. The counting of votes will be taken up on the 28th of this month.
