<br/>At least 61 people were killed in a train accident at Sainthia Station in Birbhum district of West Bengal early Monday morning. State Home Secretary Samar Ghosh told AIR news that 90 others were also injured in the mishap. <br/> <br/>The condition of some of the injured passengers is stated to be critical. The Injured have been admitted to the Suri and Santhia Hospitals in Birbhum. Army, BSF, National Disaster Management forces and police are carrying out rescue operations. <br/> <br/>State Director General Police said that donors are urgently needed to meet the scarcity of blood. Eastern Railway has opened control rooms following the accident. <br/> <br/>The stations and their phone numbers are Sealdah (033-23503535, 033-23503537), Malda (06436-222061), Bhagalpur (06412-4222433), Jamalpur (063444-3101), Ranchi (0651-2600263 & 0651-26002264), Muri (06522-244444). Railways have made arrangements in Ranchi to carry the relatives of the victims to the accident site. <br/> <br/>According to Eastern Railway sources, the incident occurred when 3148 down New Coochbehar -Sealdah Uttarbanga Express rammed into a stationary 3404 down Bhagalpur-Ranchi Vananchal Express at 1.54 am which was leaving platform No. 4 of the station. <br/> <br/>Driver M C Dey and assistant driver N K Mandal of the Sealdah-bound Uttarbanga Express, which collided with the Ranchi-bound Vananchal Express, were among the dead. The guard of the Vananchal Express A Mukherjee also died in the mishap which was so severe that the roof and the sides of one of the compartments mounted the foot overbridge across the platforms in the station, 191 kilometers from Kolkata. <br/> <br/>Several trains on the rout have been diverted. Railway Safety Commissioner has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the accident. <br/> <br/>Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee who rushed to the accident site has said that stern action will be taken against those responsible for the accident. She announced an ex gratia of five lakh rupees each and to the next of kin of those killed and one lakh rupees to the injured. One person from the deceased family will get a job in the Railways. <br/>
