In Kerala, the 60th edition of the world famous Nehru Trophy Boat race will be held at the picturesque Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha this afternoon. Twenty snake boats or Chundan Valloms will vie for the coveted trophy bearing the signature of the country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Sixty-four boats are participating in the event in which separate races will be held for smaller country craft.Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will be the Chief Guest at this year's event. Union Ministers Vayalar Ravi, K.C. Venugopal, Kerala Assembly speaker G. Karthikeyan, Chief Minister Oomen Chandy and state ministers are among those scheduled to participate.Pandit Nehru donated the trophy after going through the tremendous excitement of sailing in a snake boat during his visit to the region in 1952.
