The Unique Identification Authority of India, UIDAI will provide Aadhaar numbers to sixty crore people in the country by 2014. This was stated by UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani in New Delhi today.
Talking to media, he said, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will formally launch Aadhaar Enabled Services Delivery tomorrow in Dudu Rajasthan. He said that it will be 21st crore Aadhaar Number which will be handed over to a resident in Dudu.
Mr. Nilekani said, in a short span of two years, UIDAI has generated 21 crore Aadhaar Numbers since the issuance of the first number in September 2010.
The Aadhaar platform is being used across schemes to make pension payments, MNREGA wage payments, PDS distribtuion as well as scholarship payments.
In a reply to a question,Mr Nilekani said that the software used in the mechanism to generate Aadhaar numbers will ensure that only one number is issued to one person.
He informed that Aadhaar number will be linked with various government schemes and services so that they reach to actual beneficiaries. It will also help in reducing bogus ration cards and other documents and leave no space for ambiguity.
Mr Nilekani said that even residents who do not have identification documents can get an Aadhaar number using Introducer system.
He said privacy of an individual will be kept intact.
