The Unique Identification Authority plans to provide identification number known as Aadhar to six hundred million residents by March, 2014. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, the Minister of State for Planning Mr. Narayanasamy said till 25th of November this year about 1,54,000 numbers have been generated. Giving details of the project to the House he said that the Phase-I and Phase-II of Aadhar project is estimated to cost over Rs. 3,000 crore. AIR correspondent adds that the number will provide identity to the poor marginalised sections of society to have access to social welfare schemes and programmes meant for them.
