600 million UID cards to be rolled out by 2014

The Chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India Shri Nandan Nilekani has said that 600 million citizens of India would be provided with the unique identification number, Aadhar within three to four years.Addressing a seminar on knowledge economy organised as part of Kerala Development Congress at Thiruvanathapuram he said that the mammoth project aims at issuing identification number to each one of 1.2 billion population of India. Nilekani said that Aadhar number can be utilised for opening savings bank account and getting mobile phone connection. Under the scheme fifteen lakh citizens have been enrolled so far and any change in residence address or other details can be incorporated through post offices. The largest of its kind, the project is ten times bigger than any other similar project in the world.
