In Brazil, at least 60 people were killed when fighting broke out between rival gangs in a prison in Amazon region. Head of the state's prisons administration, Pedro Florencio said the riot at a prison in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state began late yesterday and was brought under control by around 7 am today.

He told journalists that the death toll could rise as authorities get a clearer idea of the scale of the rebellion sparked by a fight between rival drug gangs. Fontes said several of the dead had their decapitated bodies thrown over the prison wall and that most of those killed came from one gang. He said authorities are still counting the prisoners to determine how many had escaped.

Riots are common in Brazil's overcrowded and underfunded prisons. According to a justice ministry report, some 622,000 people were imprisoned in Brazil as of the end of 2014. That makes it the world's fourth-largest prison population, after the US, China and Russia, the report said.
