In Madhya Pradesh, at least sixty people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede at Ratangarh Temple in Datia district on Sunday. According to police, most of the deceased included women, children and elderly people. The death toll is likely to rise. DIG Chambal Range D. K. Arya said, the stampede broke out as a result of rumours about the bridge being damaged. Some people even jumped from the bridge.
He admitted that more crowd come for 'darshan' than expected by the administration. AIR Bhopal correspondent Samir Verma reports the injured have been rushed to hospitals in Gwalior and other nearby hospitals.
The state government has announced immediate relief of 1.5 lakh rupees to the relatives of dead, 50,000 rupees to the seriously injured and 25,000 for those with minor injuries. A similar stampede incident had occurred at the same place five years back. .
