6 killed, 54 injured in Assam twin blasts

In Assam , six persons were killed and 54 injured when two powerful blasts rocked the heart of the Nalbari town within a span of 15 minutes on Sunday morning. Five of them died on-the-spot while another succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital. The bombs were planted on bi-cycles near the Nalbari Police Station. Several shops and vehicles parked in the busy town locality have been reportedly damaged. Official sources said, 48 seriously injured have been shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital while rest of the wounded persons are undergoing treatment in Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital in Nalbari town. Police said, the banned ULFA was behind the explosions ahead of the outfit’s martyr’s day on 27th November.<br/>AIR Correspondent reports that security has been placed on high alert all over the State in view of Sunday’s twin blasts in Nalbari town. A massive search operation has been launched to apprehend the culprits. A senior police official said there were reports of a group of nine militants belonging to the outfit's 709 and 27 battalions entering the state to carry out subversive activities. The State Chief Minister Mr.Tarun Gogoi, who is in Delhi , has condemned the blasts. He said the government will not tolerate killing of innocent people. The Nalbari unit of the All Assam Students Union has given a dawn-to-dusk bandh call in Nalbari district on Monday in protest against killing of innocent people in the explosion. The local people in Nalbari lit earthen lamps on Sunday evening in memory of those killed.
