6.6 magnitude quake strikes near Norcia, destroys buildings : Italy

In Italy, a 6.6 magnitude earth quake today struck near the town of Norcia causing extensive damages to many historic buildings. The National Civil Protection agency has said, about 20 persons were injured in the most powerful earthquake in 36 years.

The agency Chief, Fabrizio Curcio, has said, the situation is positive but many buildings are in a critical state in historic centres and there are problems with electricity and water supplies. The quake has flattered a revered 600-year-old church in the ancient city. Authorities have said that, there were no reports of deaths due to the fact that thousands of residents left their homes after two strong jolts last week shook the same mountainous area. The shock also felt in the capital Rome and the authorities have closed Rome Metro temporarily for inspection. The quakes come nearly two months after a major earthquake killed almost 300 people and destroyed several towns.
